Dep Pres Zuma discusses celebration of 10-year anniversary with political parties
18 August 2003

Deputy President Jacob Zuma met with political parties represented in parliament in Pretoria to brief them and receive their input on government proposals for the celebration of the country's 10th year anniversary.

The meeting took place at the Union Buildings this afternoon, Monday, 18 August 2003.

The celebrations are aimed at uniting the country in marking the achievements of South Africa and the consolidation of democracy since 27 April 1994. The celebrations also provide an opportunity to consolidate the emergence of our national identity as well as for international positioning of the country.

Celebrations are to be held in South Africa and abroad.

The Deputy President emphasised the importance of the participation of various political formations in the milestone event, and the need for all South Africans to unite behind this national objective.

The party representatives congratulated government on the work that has been done so far and indicated a need to consult their structures. It was agreed that they would respond at beginning of September.

This was the first briefing on the celebrations. A meeting with civil society will take place on 18 September.
